Back to Dirt Conservancy was established to create and protect sustainable mountain biking, hiking, and canoe access trails in Sanford/Lee County and the surrounding Deep River basin.

Back to Dirt Conservancy aspires to secure more public access greenspace by partnering with local government agencies, private landowners, and other non profit organizations. BTDC’s long term goal is to make Lee County and the surrounding area a hub for outdoor recreation.

Charles Storm
President and Founder
A former professional mountain biker, Charlie has over 25 years of experience in the bicycle industry. He has a background as a naturalist and landscape designer. Charlie started BTDC with the goal of creating more recreational opportunities in Sanford and Lee County. In his free time Charlie can be found in a trout stream, or at a baseball game with his son.
Brian Smith
Vice President
Brian is a lifelong mountain biker, former BMX racer, and a Sanford native. He practices orthodontics in Sanford and Bayboro, NC.
Derek Borrell
Secretary
Derek grew up in Sanford and has a background in BMX. He and his family enjoy hiking in the mountains, snow skiing, and of course, mountain biking. He’s a small business owner and entrepreneur focused on the Lee County and Central NC region.
Thomas Esposito
Treasurer
Espo, as he is known locally, has been racing mountain bikes for over twenty years. He teaches art at a local elementary school and is a proud dad to a beautiful little girl!
